Core group Legal network meets
Wednesday, February 1st, 2006The European Network of Legal Experts in non-discrimination exists for one year and a half and the management, scientific board and ground coordinators (racial or ethnic origin, age, disability, religion or belief and sexual orientation) met in Oxfort.
We manage the network in partnership with the Migration Policy Group on a contract with the European Commmission and we have another one year and a half to go. So time to reflect on the achievements so far and some looking ahead.
The Network produced a number of publications which were well received (see Commission webpage for a listing). The European Anti-Discrimination Law Review, which we produce twice a year, is the first Law Review ever with illustrations (this idea in itself already led to discussions within our core group). The fact however that our work is cited in scientific cycles as ‘Commission work’ shows that still some work needs to be done to market our identity.
As an illustration: The reports we draft on the situation in the 25 member states (how their legislation does comply with the Race and Employment Equal Treatment Directives) is one of the sources the Commission uses to decide on infringement procedures against member states and it does benefit the Commission if these reports are seen as independent (and not Commission work).
The legal seminar we organised in october last year did attract more than a hundred participants, from governments, equality bodies and European NGOs.
Enough for now. I keep you posted. The Technorati website is another source to find out what weblogs post on anti-discrimination and law.
